Biographical Information:
Violinist/Fiddler Ed Caner has been labeled by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as "One of the most versatile musicians on the planet." During the past 15 years, he has performed as a sideman for over 50 major acts, including Smokey Robinson, Page and Plant, Natalie Cole, Luciano Pavarotti, Mel Torme, Ray Price, and Leftover Salmon. He served as interim Concertmaster of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and performed as section violinist with The Cleveland Chamber Symphony, Cleveland Ballet, and Cleveland Opera Orchestra. Ed has also performed over 750 shows as soloist with Runaway Truck Ramp (Boulder, Colorado), Wayne Newton (Las Vegas), The New Barleycorn (Ireland/USA), and the Broadway musical "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" (New York/Cleveland).
As a composer, Ed has been commissioned by several film and dance companies, including Independent Pictures, the Ohio Independent Film Festival, filmmaker Robert Banks, Passport Project and SAFMOD. |
From 1999 through 2001, Ed held the position of fiddling instructor (Celtic, bluegrass, and rock) at HB Woodsong's in Boulder, Colorado. His other teaching credits include rock violin clinician with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, bluegrass instructor at the Rocky Grass Academy, fiddling and rock strings clinician for the American String Teacher's Association 2005 and 2006 national conferences, fiddling clinician for the Texas Orchestra Directors Association, the Colorado Chapter of the American String Teachers Association, the Florida Music Educator's Association, the North Carolina Music Educators Association, and several Suzuki programs throughout the country, and performer/lecturer at various music festivals and universities around the country.
His book, Fiddling for Classical Stiffs was a top seller for Latham Music Publishing in 2003, 2004, and 2005. His latest book, Fiddling for Classical Kids (targeted to school orchestras, ensembles and Suzuki string students) is quickly becoming a blockbuster.
Ed has published articles in the New York Times, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, and The Ohio Music Educator's Association Triad, and has appeared on CNN for his work in the Physics Entrepreneurship Program at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).
Ed holds a master's degree in violin performance from Cleveland State University, a master's degree in Physics Entrepreneurship from CWRU, and undergraduate degrees in physics and engineering from Miami University. He is currently a lecturer in the physics department and Director of the Science and Technology Entrepreneurship master's program at CWRU.
Current Projects: Ed performs several recitals annually with award-winning pianist/composer Sebastian Anthony Birch, professor of composition and piano at Kent State University. His pop music endeavors include regular appearances with Walkin' Cane (blues), Jim Tigue (Grateful Dead/Bob Dillion/Celtic), Mo Mojo (Zydeco), and the Rhondas ("Sexicana"). His Celtic, folk, blues, rock, bluegrass & swing repertoire includes over 1,000 songs and fiddle tunes.
